Print Care
How should I handle my artwork?
A print is most fragile prior to it being framed.
You'll want to make sure you handle your print with clean, oil-free hands. If you can, wear cotton gloves, and always avoid touching the printed surface directly.
We recommend you take your print directly to a picture framer and leave it for them to take out and un roll (If you can resist the temptation of opening the tube yourself!)
Can I leave my artwork rolled up for a while?
Yes, but it must be kept at room temperature with low humidity.
If either of these storage requirements are not possible then we highly recommend you get your artwork framed as soon as possible and do not leave it rolled up in the tube.
The tube my print arrived in looks damaged, what should I do?
Grrrr! Aren't couriers just the best!?
Usually this isn't anything to worry about - our mailing tubes are super strong and more often than not protect the the artwork inside form external knocks.
Take a photo of the tube before you open it and then inspect the artwork inside. If it's damaged as well just take another photo and send both to howdy@stephbrookestudio.com
We'll take a look and get a replacement on its way to you ASAP.
Finding A Framer
How do I find a good framer?
The best way to make sure your artwork is cared for (and framed to perfection) is to read the reviews of the picture framer(s) you're considering. Then head in to their shop and make sure you're happy with their service and the time dedicated by their staff whilst you make your decision.
If you're unsure, visit a couple of framers to compare their frame range and service.
If you're still stuck, we've take the liberty of compiling a super comprehensive list of trusted framers in each state.

Canvas Framing
General info
Rolled canvas artworks are shipped in a rigid mailing tube. They come with an additional 5cm mirrored border and an extra 1cm white edge to allow for professional stretching and framing.
The finished stretched size of the artwork should be the size listed on our website, with the mirrored border and white edge wrapped around the edge of the stretcher.
What's the difference between stretching & framing?
Stretching refers to the process of a canvas print being "stretched" over a subframe - this pulls it tight, removes ripples and prepares it for framing (which is optional).
Framing for canvas artworks refers to the process where the stretched artwork is placed and fixed inside a 'tray' frame, creating a 'boxed' look with a beautiful surround.
Technical details, for your framer
STRETCHING
- Stretch onto high-quality stretcher bars, 38mm depth or greater is recommended.
- For prints with any side over 80cm, install corner or cross braces for added rigidity.
- Staple the canvas securely to the back, ensuring it is taut and free of ripples.
- Fold the corners so that the visible folds are on the top and bottom, not the sides.
FRAMING
- Use an L-shaped/tray frame with 55mm depth, 10mm front face and a 5-10mm shadow gap between the canvas and the inside of the frame.
- Attach the frame directly to the stretcher using screws, making sure the canvas surface is slightly recessed below the front of the frame.
- For artworks up to 1.4m wide use D-rings with metal wire. Artworks over 1.4m wide use D-rings with no wire, so the artwork is direct hung.
Paper Framing
General info
Rolled cotton rag prints are delivered in a rigid mailing tube.
They include a 5cm white border in addition to the print size listed on our website. This border can be trimmed off or left on, depending on your preference.
Technical details, for your framer
Use a box frame with the following suggested dimensions:
- Up to 1m wide: 38mm depth, 20mm front face
- Over 1m wide: 45mm depth, 38mm front face
Use UV-protective glass.
Insert a foam-core or timber spacer into the rebate of the frame, creating a physical separation between the glazing and the print
Secure the mounted print using framing points, and seal with archival tape.
Hanging hardware:
- Prints up to 1m wide: D-rings with metal wire
- Prints over 1m wide: D-rings with no wire (direct hang for added support)
