The Unseen Gardener

Oct 28, 2025by Steph Brooke

It has been a grounding experience to paint something I can't see. To be curious and use my imagination to challenge the expectation of painting a tangible element. To take sight away and become a dreamer in the company of flowers.

Painting this collection has reminded me of why I create. Not to escape the world we live in; but to be connected to it in the ways I feel is the most magical. I connect to myself through this experience and I feel like I belong.

You can feel it on your skin, you can smell it in the scent it carries, you can hear it in the movement of flora. It remains unseen, only revealing itself through the vessel of another.

I'm connected to it, it reminds me of my dreams. I can feel them, I can hear them, and I know they are real and true. I'll never see them in a physical sense until they come to life through the vessel of me.

I plant the seeds, nurture their growth, and try to keep them alive regardless of the conditions. If it's meant for me, I can enjoy the journey of their growth and marvel at the flowers that grew from last season's seeds.

If it's not meant for me, there are plenty of travelling seeds carried by the wind that didn't need tending. They grow naturally without effort, and maybe that'll be the path to take.

A gift from the unseen gardener.
